The Mystical Imagination of Patrick Kavanagh The Mystical Imagination of Patrick Kavanagh
Few who knew Patrick Kavanagh by sight would be likely to regard him as a mystic or prophet. People moved away from him in pubs, buses and trains. He frightened young girls with his loud language when they passed him in the street or on country roads.

Yet Kavanagh's work stands as a monument to a nobility and gentleness of soul that surprises even as it inspires. Above all, it challenges us not to be deceived by appearance - that beneath the coat of a beggar there may lurk a hidden mystic.

'In her study of the turbulent imagination of this turbulent man, Una Agnew has succeeded in unveiling the still centre. In doing this she has placed us all in her debt.' The Irish Times

'The author is at home on his (Kavanagh's) horizon. Her story is simply written and flows with the energy of an afficionado … Accessible to all who wish to befriend this outstanding Christian poet.' The Furrow

'A fascinating intellectual and spiritual biography of the poet. Dr. Agnew's book fills a gap in Irish literary studies that has long been overdue.' Literature and Theology

Una Agnew PhD is a St Louis sister who teaches at the Milltown Institute, Dublin. She has written and lectured widely on spirituality and related topics. A native of north County Louth, she has, in recent years, carried out exhaustive research on the life and works of Patrick Kavanagh.

No Earthly Estate No Earthly Estate
God and Patrick Kavanagh - An Anthology
by Fr. Tom Stack

'Patrick Kavanagh himself said that poetry was a mystical thing, and Tom Stack's reading of the poems amplifies and illuminates that claim. His book is informed by a deep faith and underwritten by long pastoral experience. He has done his scholarly homework but the personal conviction behind the writing alerts us all over again to Kavanagh's poetry as ''a hole in heaven's gable''.'
- Seamus Heaney

As poets go, Patrick Kavanagh (1904-67) enjoys an exceptionally popular and influential place in the hearts of the Irish public. He offers us a uniquely distilled reflection of ourselves as a people and uncovers for us an intriguing spiritual landscape, both rich and recognisable. In this, his poetry is both original and enduring.

It is noteworthy that in Patrick Kavanagh's extant work of published poems, which number 253, no fewer than 138 of these include explicitly religious themes, images or allusions. This means that references to Christian faith, in one way or another, make their appearances in more than half of all his poetic writing. It is for that reason that this collection of poems appears here as an anthology in its own right.

Tom Stack offers a commentary on the spiritual content and significance of the sixty poems here selected. This consists of a general introduction to the anthology, together with particular introductions to the three long poems in the collection, The Great Hunger, Lough Derg and Father Mat.

Author Biography
Tom Stack is a Limerick man. He was educated at Crescent College, UCD, Clonliffe and Harvard University. He is a Catholic priest who, in addition to various pastoral assignments in Dublin, has also worked as a newspaper columnist and broadcaster, and was a member of the Radharc film documentary team. He is now parish priest in Milltown, Dublin.

Dancing with Kitty Stobling Dancing with Kitty Stobling
The Patrick Kavanagh Poetry Award Winners 1971 - 2003

Edited by Antoinette Quinn

Patrick Kavanagh exhorted his audience to 'Come Dance with Kitty Stobling', where he envisioned his 'rhyme / Cavorting on mile-high stilts' across the 'colourful country' to the amazement of earthbound onlookers. Kitty Stobling was his zany, carefree muse, leading him on to indulge his spirits in high jinks.

In Dancing with Kitty Stobling, the thirty-two winners of the award instituted in Patrick Kavanagh's honour respond to his challenge, creating a joyous celebration of the centenary of his birth. Ireland's longest-running award for a first collection of poems, the Patrick Kavanagh Poetry Award reveals the thematic variety and stylistic eclecticism of its winners. Each contributor has selected five pages of their own work, allowing readers a rare insight into the poet's personal preferences. Some - including Roz Cowman, Thomas McCarthy, Aidan Mathews and Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin - have offered new, unpublished work.

Encompassing voices as diverse as Pat Boran, Celia de Fréine, Paul Durcan, Sinéad Morrissey, Peter Sirr and Joseph Woods, Dancing with Kitty Stobling is a mosaic of some of Ireland's very best poetry.

Cu Chulainn to Kavanagh Cu Chulainn to Kavanagh
The Cu Chulainn to Kavanagh experience is intended for all who have an interest in the writers of the south Ulster area. It is for those who wish to relax and attune themselves to the vision, hope, wit and romance of these writers as well as for students with more scholarly intent.

The text is developed through sections extending from the introductory sense of place through to present day writers. Study cards, focusing on related elements of each section, provide a starting point for more in-depth exploration.
Cu Chulainn to Kavanagh highlights the wealth of literature in the Armagh and Monaghan region, but does not claim to be a comprehensive exploration of all its writers. It will be best appreciated when complemented by visits to the Patrick Kavanagh Rural and Literary Resource Centre in Inniskeen and the Navan Centre in Armagh; thus creating interactive learning experiences.
