Few who knew Patrick Kavanagh by sight would be likely to regard him as a mystic or prophet. People moved away from him in pubs, buses and trains. He frightened young girls with his loud language when they passed him in the street or on country roads.
Yet Kavanagh's work stands as a monument to a nobility and gentleness of soul that surprises even as it inspires. Above all, it challenges us not to be deceived by appearance - that beneath the coat of a beggar there may lurk a hidden mystic.
'In her study of the turbulent imagination of this turbulent man, Una Agnew has succeeded in unveiling the still centre. In doing this she has placed us all in her debt.' The Irish Times
'The author is at home on his (Kavanagh's) horizon. Her story is simply written and flows with the energy of an afficionado … Accessible to all who wish to befriend this outstanding Christian poet.' The Furrow
'A fascinating intellectual and spiritual biography of the poet. Dr. Agnew's book fills a gap in Irish literary studies that has long been overdue.' Literature and Theology
